The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Nevada is proud to announce the launch of its public awareness campaign, "Respect the Cone: My family needs me home," aimed at fostering a culture of safety within roadway and highway construction work zones. The campaign launched with a press conference on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the U.S. 395 northbound on-ramp at Parr Boulevard. Speakers included Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, Nevada Department of Transportation Director Tracy Larkin Thomason, and Sparks Mayor/RTC Washoe Chair Ed Lawson. Road and highway workers were also in attendance.
With extensive involvement in road construction projects across Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County, the Nevada Chapter AGC recognizes the critical need to protect roadway and highway workers from the dangers of impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving in work zones.
According to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), there have been more than 7,000 crashes in work zones in Nevada over the past five years, resulting in 17 fatalities. Additionally, from 2022-2023, there was a 39% increase in work zone crashes in Nevada. These statistics highlight the urgent need for enhanced safety measures. Roadway and highway workers are integral members of our community, deserving a safe work environment that allows them to return home to their families each day.
The "Respect the Cone: My family needs me home" campaign seeks the community's assistance in safeguarding construction workers. These dedicated individuals are working to build Nevada’s future and require our collective effort to ensure their safety in the work zone.
The campaign materials feature local roadway and highway construction workers and their families in an effort to encourage drivers in the community to remember the people who are behind the cones and to slow down and pay attention in work zones. In the coming weeks and months, the community will see work zone safety messages and public service announcements on billboards, theater advertisements, digital advertisements, social media, signs in work zones, and more
